In an attempt to streamline my home studio a bit and replace a fritzy Alesis IO-14 audio interface (don't buy! bad quality!) I bought the PreSonus FireStudio Tube (PFT) for the higher quality preamps on the two SuperChannels. Moving slowly from a more MIDI/hardware based synth studio, I've started using more softsynths and doing more miked recording (vocals, acoustic guitar, various percussion). BUT, I still have a few analog synths and modules that frequently get pulled into the mix (love that zero-latency!), and I envisioned keeping at least 3 pieces of hardware directly plugged into the 6 line-inputs on the back of the PFT to call up when needed.
In total the PFT has 2 "SuperChannel" inputs (good for mic or instrument level), 8 XLR mic inputs, and 6 quarter-inch/line-in inputs, supposedly good for plugging in line-level devices like synths, drums machines, mixer inputs, etc. To control all those inputs, PreSonus provides some mixing software that decently lets you monitor and adjust input levels where needed.
Soooo...I removed a big mixer that was taking up desk space, screwed the PFT into my rack, and moved the small, 12-unit rack to the desk space formerly occupied by the mixer. I then plugged 3 synths into the PFT and started recording in Sonar.
And THAT'S when I realized something was wrong. I have a Yamaha Motif Rack that I usually use to set-up some basic elements for song writing, and I tried recording the inputs from a keys/drum/bass mix, but the meters barely registered. I thought maybe I had something connected or adjusted incorrectly. I cranked input levels in the PreSonus mixing software, maxed the MIDI-volume to 127 for each of the parts, cranked the master volume on the Motif Rack, and STILL was just barely getting little bumps on the recorded clip graphics.
Frustrated, I decided to hit the PreSonus Forums on the internet and discovered this is a known problem. The line inputs for the PFT are just...incredibly...QUIET! Someone in the forum suggested you have to use pro-level gear that outputs a min of +4db. So I checked my Motif Rack and discovered it outputs at +6db...more than hot enough of a signal. More than a year ago, one of the PreSonus techs stated on the forum he would ask if the problem could be fixed in any of the upgrades, but so far, it hasn't. And the fact it has been a known problem for well over 2 years would indicate they either CAN'T fix it, or have no interest to. Other two suggested work-arounds (from PreSonus techs, no less) were to use the 2 "SuperChannels" on the front of the unit ("but be really careful with your input levels...you could damage the mic-pres" they said) or getting quarter-inch to XLR adapted cables and use the mic-pres on the back of the unit, again suggesting to be VERY careful because they weren't intended for line-input level devices but "should work if the levels were kept low". Lastly, several other users of the device stated if you use a preamp with your hardware (like my powered mixer I had put away), you can drive the levels loud enough to make the line-inputs usable and to more easily record with them. Yeah, getting back out my mixer really helps my whole studio-stream-lining effort, eh?
WTFO? PreSonus' OWN techs are giving scotch tape, work-around solutions to a real problem. Wow...thanks for the massive assist and attentive customer support.
BUT...all in all, the REST of this unit is pretty decent (hey, I'm a fair-minded person!). If you don't need the 6 line-level inputs or you DO have equipment that outputs REALLY hot (my unusually "loudest-of-the-bunch-of-synths" Alesis A6 is the only piece of hardware I've found that pumps enough power to be plugged, unassisted, into the line-ins), then this might work for you. The "SuperChannels" really are super, and best of all, the copy of PreSonus' "StudioOne Artist" DAW software that comes with the device might actually give Sonar a run for its money (for me anyway). But for the money, I've basically bought 2 really good "SuperChannels" and 8 other mic pres I could use should I decide to record an entire band or some drums. I'm not quite sure it was worth it.
Oh yeah...almost forgot to mention...this interface has a history of problems working with Sonar. My experience isn't horrible, but I do have a lot more drop-outs and interruptions than I ever had with the Alesis IO-14. PreSonus Forums suggest the problem lies in using ASIO drivers instead of WDM drivers, but I haven't tested that one.
Pros:
- The super "SuperChannels"...GREAT recording quality
- The "StudioOne Artist" DAW software that looks pretty super as well
Cons:
- The 6, almost-unusable line-level inputs
- No digital input/output
- Occasionally problematic with Sonar
- The price, given the almost unusable line-level inputs and no digital I/O
I have to say my experience with this is disappointing enough, I'm researching a replacement, and will likely sell it if I find something better.
Those are my thoughts...the rest is your call....cheers...
Added to the review on 9 Sept 2010: PreSonus has interestingly wiped all the old entries in their forum. I found none of the previous complaints I'd read about the PFT line-level problem, and even my own question was deleted from the forum. The forum has a new interface, so I'm sure they would probably claim that was the reason the old complaints were deleted.

Note that the speed of your processor, amount of RAM and size and speed of your hard drive will greatly affect the overall performance of your recording system. This device looks great on paper. Don't buy it if you are a SONAR user. Presonus has designed this device to work well with Cubase LE. That, and other editions of Cubase, are about the only DAWs that I have heard user success stories about. There are plenty of Firestudio / Cakewalk SONAR problems. Also, be careful of what MAC OS you have. The Presonus minimum requirements are 10.3.9 but users have reported needing 10.4 at a minimum. The Windows minimum requirements are WinXP SP1. I can attest to this being incorrect. You will suffer many BSODs if you use anything below WinXP SP2. The preamps sound good. There is plenty of headroom, plenty of output gain, etc. The drivers need to mature, particularly Presonus1394.sys. This audio interface is not quite there yet. I give it two stars for features. I returned mine for a refund.

If you play live and your band is constantly complaining that they can't hear themselves in the mix, this is the perfect product to solve that. Lets back up...if you are a vocalist trying to hear yourself or to do harmonies, it is almost impossible if all you have is the main mix in your phones. This device allows you to take, say, the direct feed from your vocal channel and plug it into a stereo input...for each channel. The three singers in my band each have an output that they are able to mix into the main mix. The result: "more me" since my vocals are boosted above the other vocals and instruments. And you can't believe how much better you can sing when you can actually hear yourself.
Of course, the other vocalists can hear you too, but they can mainly hear themselves, so everybody can sing their parts without getting disoriented by the other vocalists
You get two stereo inputs for all the channels, and you can mix them together, so you could theoretically have a backing track mix on A and a click track on B. If the drummer needs the click, mix heavy toward B. If you are a singer and dont need to hear the click, mix heavy toward A. Then, boost your own personal direct signal from the mix board so that your vocals stand head and shoulders above the other stuff. NOW you can hear!!!
This is one of those products I'm constantly inventing in my head that don't exist, except that this one does, and with more features and flexibility than I ever would have imagined. Plenty of volume in the headphones, nice clean sound, and you can hook up six headphones to this thing, each with individual A/B track mix and "more me" mix input. Pricey, but worth it. This thing is a game changer. As the guy who usually gets the middle David Crosby part in the harmony matrix, I no longer get confused, off pitch, or lost. Bring it on...I can sing ANYTHING now...

"Turn my headphones up!" "More me, I can't hear myself!" "Turn down that click!" It gets old. Change that tune with the HP60 headphone distribution system. The HP60 is more than just a half-dozen headphone amps, it's a field-tested solution to a host of common headphone-monitoring problems. Let's start with "turn my headphones up." Each of the HP60's six headphone amps has its own level control and puts out 150 mW, which is loud enough to drive the alligators out of the Louisiana swamps. If they can't hear this headphone system, they're stone deaf. More likely they'll scream, "turn it down, you're killing me!" Problem solved. Now let's solve "turn down that click." The HP60 features two sets of line-level, stereo inputs that are routed to all six headphones, a Mix control that sets their relative levels for each headphone output, and a mute switch for each headphone. So you can feed the main control-room mix to channel A and the click to channel B and use the Mix controls to individually raise or lower the click relative to the main mix for each musician. Problem solved. As for "more me," in addition to the two pairs of main stereo inputs, you get an external stereo input pair with level control for each headphone channel. A Mono switch lets you sum the left and right inputs. So you can send each of the whiners a feed of just their instrument or voice and can control the level separately for each. Problem

I must say this is a great product. With the right setting it is super quiet. Looks really nice in my rack too. The stock tube definitely doesn't sound too bad, seems to sound more fuller as the hours go by. I ordered a electro-harmonic tube to see if the sound is any fuller,but didn't arrived yet. there are some things I don't like however about it such as, Why the hell these guys put the power button at the back of an equipment intended to be in a rack? The attack on the compressor is very fast smooth at the same time, however there is no way in hell the ratio goes up to 10. Overall a great piece of gear I think with a better tube its certainly up there with them $1,900 avalons. I will get another one soon.

I purchased the Firestudio Project a year ago and have been thrilled with its performance.
The external LEDs are a huge plus for setting your levels, and the eight XLR/quarter-inch inputs are very convenient. You also have phantom power available for all inputs.
The latency with this unit is minimal with a PC running Vista in a stripped down form as recommended by one of the major music retailer web sites.
Cubase LE is fairly simple to use, and it's easy to export your individual tracks for use in other DAWs like ProTools, if you intend to mix in a studio. Another note regarding Cubase: out of the box the program defaults to 16-bit recording, and you will definitely want to change the bit depth to 24-bit, particularly if recording in a noisy home studio environment. The noise floor, especially on vocal recordings with high gain on a condenser mic, is considerably higher with 16-bit. So, make sure you have a computer that is beefy enough to handle 24-bit because it does use more system resources.
The FireStudio also comes packaged with some nice VST plug-ins including instruments by Halion, some of which are pretty passable like the Jazz Piano.
When researching interfaces, my biggest concern was compatibility with hardware, as I had read some horror stories about interfaces not working with FireWire drivers correctly on certain PCs or Macs. This one worked perfectly out of the box with a store-bought HP desktop, so my experience was great in that regard.
My only complaint is that this unit was supposed to come with the Presonus EyeQ software - a multi-band EQ and spectrum analyzer, which was pictured on the box, but not in the box. I've read that others got left out of the EyeQ party as well, and I have e-mailed tech support but not yet gotten a response after one week.

Universal Control consists of the Launch window and the Device window. The Eureka has gotten a lot of buzz. The box feels solid and substantial. It comes with gain, hard/soft compression, three band parametric eq, and master volume. The patch order of the eq and compresion can be switched, depending on your needs. Other useful features include phase inversion, variable impedence, and a saturation knob. A backlit analog meter can display incoming signal level or gain reduction. Inputs and outputs are both TRS and XLR. An effects insert point is included. An optional digital output card is available.
I bought the Eureka on the recommendation of a trusted music salesperson (yes, they exist) to power my Royer 121 ribbon mic. There were no preamps anywhere close to this price that he would consider recommending. As it turns out, he did me a great favor. The Eureka does a very solid job with the Royer mic (although I haven't heard the Royer on anything else, so I can only speak to the pairing of the two). Better yet, it gives me new options for almost every other piece of gear I own. I have an inexpensive Precision bass that really benefits from this box - the compression and preampe give it the fullness of a better instrument, while the eq helps to control the noisiness and unevenness between strings. The variable impedence allows users to try those DIY tricks on Shure SM57 mics without pulling out a soldering iron. Other budget-to-midrange mics also benefit. I run my Mojave tube mic through the Eureka to control peaks with good results. I haven't found anything that doesn't benefit at least a bit from the Eureka. I have even heard of mixes being run through the Eureka (one side at a time) to remove the dreaded "digital chill". Between the quiet operation and the versatility of the Eureka, it is no wonder that it is quickly becoming a "best kept secret" among many home recordists and even sine professionals.
Downsides: The knobs are close together and seem vulnerable to being bent. Three sweep eq's with no shelving eq are less than I'd prefer, but they do their job. The optional digital card can take signals from two Eurekas run in tandem, but the signal from the second Eureka must pass to the card in the "analog domain" before it is converted to a digital signal. As with any analog gear, favorite settings must be written down instead of being saved to memory for instant recall. None of these issues is a deal-killer - they just illustrate how hard I had to work to come up with any complaints at all.
If you're looking for a way to bring your home recording quality up a notch, or a way to give old gear a new lease on life, the Eureka may be just the ticket. Its quality sound, versatility and bang-for-the-buck put it in a niche that will make many bugdet-minded recordists very happy.

The Eureka is a professional recording channel strip containing a discrete class A transformer-coupled microphone preamplifier, compressor, and three-band parametric equalizer. The microphone preamplifier features variable input impedance so that the Eureka can be matched and "tuned" for all types of microphones and recording applications. I recommend this only if: 1) you are not recording a guitar with high output pickups through the instrument-in, because it will clip even with the gain turned all the way down on the AudioBox, 2) you are not using an SM57 or some other dynamic mic that requires more than 35dB of gain, otherwise it will be too quiet, and 3) your headphones have an impedance above 100 ohms, otherwise the USB-powered Audiobox can't keep up with the current draw and will have no bass in the headphone monitoring out.
If you meet those conditions, then this is a great, affordable, stable recording interface. On my Mac it's plug-n-play, both on my older G4 powerbook with Tiger and newer 2010 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard. On the Mac, no separate software or drivers are needed. The construction of the AudioBox is very good. All metal box, and metal knobs. The blue metal looks great.
The mic preamps sound pretty darn good, crystal clear if you're using a condenser mic. For recording vocals on condensers, this interface is great. If you're on an old system, however, recording direct guitar and running it through a virtual amp simulation will give you latency problems. Not as much on Core 2 Duo systems and above. Be advised that the zero-latency monitoring is for a clean signal going in, not the processed sound from your software plugin, thus you can't do zero-latency distorted guitar recording that way unless you listen to yourself play clean while recording.
Now officially this does not have line-level recording ability. So you can't take the headphone output from a walkman, guitar amp, or mp3 player into this. But actually that does work as long as you carefully keep the line signal volume low and plug it into the instrument jack on the AudioBox. I've done this and it records just fine. But if the line volume gets turned up too high, you risk burning out the chip inside the AudioBox, since it wasn't engineered with safety mechanisms for that, thus Presonus says it doesn't do line-in.
It gets 4 stars for what it does well, and minus 1 star because of the caveats / exceptions listed at the beginning. As with all gear buying, my honest recommendation is to save up and get something 1.5X the cost of what you thought you could afford. If I could do it all over again, I would get an Echo Audiofire 4, Focusrite Saffire Pro 14, or Apogee Duet and call it a day. But, my Audiobox has served me well for over two years now, made some great clear recordings, right up until I got new headphones with too low impedance and the bass dropped out.
