(More customer reviews)I went to CompUSA intending to buy the MTV music generator because I wanted to get started in writing my own techno music and I needed something inexpensive. Well, needless to say, I didn't buy it. I came out of the store with Techno Ejay and I have never regretted the $40 I paid for it! This is an awesome, easy to use program that has many worthy features. I was skeptical about just how good my music could be using a software program - but it was easy to use and very fun to play with. I can write a great sounding song in under 2 hours and then, export it as a wav file and burn my own album! Awesome! And the best part is, if you get tired of the massive 3,000 sound collection, you can import your own wav files! I recommend this product to anyone who wants to be a techno music composer, but can't afford expensive mixing equipment and synthesizers. I recommend buying Data Becker's 10,000 sound clips if you want more wav files to use with Techno Ejay.

Mackie HR824mkii 8-inch2-Way Studio Monitor Review

(More customer reviews)Mackie 824s are consistently rated among the very best studio monitors, often head-to-head against far more expensive monitors from Genelec and others.
The 824s are ruler-flat across the audio spectrum. The bass is so accurate that if you are not accustomed to such, you might think it doesn't have enough bass ... until you feel the walls shaking. In other words, this is real bass, not muddy booming. The monitors have a passive radiator in addition to the speakers in order to add to bass performance.
The sonic character of these monitors is adjustable for wall placement via a 3-way switch. You adjust input sensitivity via a pot. They have high and low cut switches should you have a bright room or use a sub. They have a two-way power mode switch that swaps between always on and hot standby. Finally, they accomodate XLR, RCA, and phono connectors. The high and low filter EQ curves are smooth and introduce no odd artifacts or distortion.
In addition to sonic excellence, the 824s are thermally protected from overload, though I don't find that they run hot anyway. They are magnetically shielded, meaning you can use them quite close to monitors and TVs - important as the speaker magnets are quite large.
The 824s are THX certified. I've used them in both home studio and home theater applications and have nothing but praise for them. Be careful about your connections if you are using these for home theater! Powered studio monitors like these take LINE LEVEL signals and should not be connected directly to speaker outputs, which carry far more power! Typically both types of connections are available on home theater receivers.
Last bit of advice: these monitors are heavy, about 35 pounds, and while they will fit on a typical speaker stand, they will not be very stable set up that way. Forewarned is forearmed. One of mine took a fall, incurring some cosmetic damage on the front panel.
These are truly wonderful monitors that you can listen to all day without tiring. I would recommend them to anyone for either home or professional use.

(More customer reviews)Don't expect these to be a smaller version of PA speakers. Studio monitors are quality over quantity. Yes, these are plenty loud for their intended use. The important part is their sound quality. As with any speaker of this quality, proper break-in really does make them sound better. The RP8G2 is a great value choice. Yes, there are better speakers on the market. You will pay a real premium for them, though. It is hard to evaluate speakers just on the published specs. Sound quality is so much more than technical spectral analysis.
These are solidly built, great sounding monitors that are a good value. I can really recommend them.

(More customer reviews)The pop filter does its job well. I have had no issue with its ability to prevent unwanted pops. The quality on the other hand is not the best. I have to transport my mic setup often and have already had the snake portion of the assembly separate from the mount. It reattaches rather easily but it come loose every time I need to adjust the position of the shield. For the money it does its job. next time I will shop for a higher end product.

Mackie MR8 Reference Monitor (Single Speaker) Review

(More customer reviews)We installed a pair of MR8s to go with a 32" Sharp Aquos as a TV (terrestrial broadcast HDTV) and also as a computer monitor. I use the Mackie MR8s for enjoying music and also for mixing my home recordings (captured on a Korg D888, mixed on a PC as a DAW) - I'd grown tired of the okay, but very consumer quality of the Dell 5.1 surround speakers that I'd been using for sound, and wanted to go back to a classic stereo system -- I only have two ears, and I've found that two really good speakers are better then a bunch of not-so-good speakers, and placement of surround speakers is such a problem if you don't have the luxury of building a room around them. Because they would flank the Sharp monitor, they had to be shielded, and since I'm using them for mixing they have to be flat and true. After research, and considering my budget, I reduced the list to the Mackie MR8, the KRK Rokit Powered 8 Generation 2, and the M-Audio Studiophile BX8a speakers -- all are shielded powered monitors with 8" woofers and at comparable (modest) prices. I wanted to hear them side by side, and we found a local Guitar Center that could do that. Given the apparent similarity of the products I expected it would be challenging to pick between them, but it was an easy, obvious choice. The Mackies had a much more transparent sound. The KRKs are too midrangey for my tastes (and that yellow is ugly, IMO). The M-Audio might be good for dance oriented music (possibly the front mounted bass would be good in that context), but for the acoustic music I mostly listen to and mix clarity is so critical and the MR8s are clearly superior. After a week of use the only negative I've notices so far is the limitation on the inputs; there are three sets of inputs (XLR, 1/4" and RCA) but you can only hook up one at a time. Keeps the price down, no doubt, and I don't mind too much but it means turning them off and swapping plugs to use the speakers for the TV. Some would feel these speakers are too big, but I feel 8" is really the minimum to get a full, rich sound. So in a nutshell, love 'em! I've owned Mackie gear for many years, they've rarely disappointed.

PreSonus Central Station Studio Control Center Review

(More customer reviews)Prior to buying this box, I had my DAW's analog output directly connected to my studio monitors and used an old stereo receiver as a headphone amp. I would not have expected the Central Station to make such a huge difference to my way of working but it's been incredibly convenient to be able to control the system volume with a real knob, switch between studio monitors and a cheap boombox and to have the built-in headphone amp with plenty of volume. I can't explain why but being able to run my sound card (Digital Audio Labs CardDeluxe) at full output has made my mixes come out better in the form of crisper sound and better separation of instruments. Next step is to hook up the DAW's digital output to the CS so that I can have a custom headphone mix and leave it up during the tracking process without disrupting whatever mix decisions I've made. This box did exactly what I needed and helped me streamline my workflow without degrading my audio quality.

PreSonus StudioChannel Tube Mic Pre / Compressor / EQ Review

(More customer reviews)I must say this is a great product. With the right setting it is super quiet. Looks really nice in my rack too. The stock tube definitely doesn't sound too bad, seems to sound more fuller as the hours go by. I ordered a electro-harmonic tube to see if the sound is any fuller,but didn't arrived yet. there are some things I don't like however about it such as, Why the hell these guys put the power button at the back of an equipment intended to be in a rack? The attack on the compressor is very fast smooth at the same time, however there is no way in hell the ratio goes up to 10. Overall a great piece of gear I think with a better tube its certainly up there with them $1,900 avalons. I will get another one soon.

Mackie Onyx 820i FireWire Recording Mixer Review

(More customer reviews)This mixer is well built and works very well as the foundation for our home studio. The Onyx preamps are very clean and the integrated 8x2 firewire interface offers great flexibility when configuring the mixer for recording.
My unit also came with a basic bundle license for Mackie's Traction3 DAW software. This mixer, along with Traction3 make a very capable recording setup.

Premium Analog Mixer When it comes to the high pressure environment of a recording session or live performance, you simply cannot beat the stability and reliability of an analog mixer. The 820i has a plethora of analog features that are sure to please. First off, there are three Onyx mic preamps which have been proven as some of the best boutique quality preamps available today. These are great for Garage Band or Logic on the Mac and recreate the sound with amazing clarity, depth and tone. Plus bass is impressive for a small speaker and high's are crisp and detailed without being unbalanced. These speakers create an amazing listening experience for all type of music and instruments for a studio or small room. Not going to be for a large room setup but if you have the space or can mount these for computer/studio setup you will be very impressed with them.

However, this is one of those items where you really notice when it is later bypassed. Even the best speakers will sound better in ANY room with this unit.
Its only problem is that the Orient copy factory is now turning out almost identical units for about 1/4 the price.

KRK ERGO: Smarter than Your Average Gear Room correction products aren’t new, but thank goodness ERGO is. While conventional room correction systems utilize simple analysis and limited bands of EQ (often fewer than 8), ERGO uses multiple measurements and proprietary algorithms to create a 3D image of the room, and then applies 1024 dynamic filters to control the audio environment. Our 3D model allows users to preserve the “good” characteristics of the room, while correcting the bad... ERGO doesn’t color the sound or produce an artificially sterile environment. ERGO produces the best mix for a given room; a mix that will translate better to other listening environments, since it was mixed in a perfect room.
KRK Ergo Features:
Large Volume Knob: Ultra-smooth response volume control provides simultaneous control of ERGO's A/B/Sub outputs.
A Speakers: Enables or disables the audio being sent to the A speakers.
B Speakers: Enables or disables the audio being sent to the B or subwoofer speakers.
Room Correction: Turns room correction processing on or off.
Focus/Global: The 3D model allows users to preserve the good features of the room, while correcting the bad. This gives you perfectly corrected sound while mixing. Headphone Volume (side panel): Adjusts the output level of the headphone jack. The headphones have their own independent audio stream, or can mirror the A stream.

Forget speaker set-ups and systems that unnecessarily add treble and bass to the music you're listening to including ones with active equalization that determine on your behalf what you're ears should be perceiving at the moment and eliminating other frequencies that it believes aren't as audible anyway.
How about jumping back into studio monitors that deliver music the way the recording engineers meant it to be heard. Too expensive? Hold on. Not with a Mackie MR5. The price you pay is per piece all right, but don't forget these are powered speakers. And at this price point you get a flat frequency response which means there is no colorization. What is recorded is what you get.
Studio monitors used to be so expensive and out of reach that consumers were bombarded with those other brands that promised to wow your ears with a "perception" of full spectrum audio rather than actually provide your ears with, umm, a full spectrum.
Finally Mackie decided to release lower end audio gear with high end results that appeals to everyone else outside of the audiophile world.APPLICATION...
These speakers are built with 3 types of audio connections.
1. Balanced XLR
2. Balanced TRS (which also can accept unbalanced TS)
3. Unbalanced RCA
Originally intended for near-field monitoring as well as accurate enough for home studio mixing. But knock yourselves out in using these anywhere you see fit. If it's good for mixing, it's great for whatever else.
I used it as my desktop computer speakers. If your computer has a 1/8 stereo output a.k.a. mini-stereo then just purchase a simple (but solidly constructed) 1/8" stereo to RCA cable.HOW DOES IT SOUND...
GREAT! However, you need to re-orient your ears if you've been used to unnecessary and heavy equalized equipment. Take a moment to listen to your favourite CD. One that you are very familiar with from beginning to end. Turn off or flatten the equalizer setting. Take one pass on it and determine if you really to highlight or defeat certain frequencies only because you either have wall to wall carpeting and draperies or bare walls.
You're goal is to listen to music the way it was recorded. If you have unbiased speakers in all frequency range then you will notice nuances in the recording that you never even thought was there. Seriously.WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW...
Although this is the smallest of the Mackie studio monitoring speakers, it's still a force to be reckoned with in terms of performance, size and weight. And that's a good thing. It looks, feels and performs like any solid studio monitor. Nothing has been spared. Rather than spend money on marketing, they spend it on actual R&D and build quality.
Frequency response of 60HZ-20KHZ (+-3db) with internal bi-amplification of 55 watts (85 watts peak) for the low frequency and 30 watts (50 watts peak) for the high frequency. And don't be fooled by other speaker manufacture ratings stating 200 watts power which don't mean a thing unless they meant peak power before the internal fuse blows while already clipping at maximum distortion. Did you hear how loud your built-in television speakers can get. To think they are rated from 3 to 6 watts only. So with these truthful power rating, these Mackies are LOUD! Your ears neighbours will come knocking first before you can blow the fuse of these speakers.COMPARED WITH...
The truth is I was perfectly happy with my Blue Sky MediaDesk 2.1 speakers just because I couldn't afford a THX pm3-approved Mackie HR624 at that time. The frequency response was awesome at 35HZ-20KHz. The speakers were fully sealed which provided less distortion and true bass output. I tossed the boxes so I decided to sell them when I moved cross-country than risk damaging perfectly great speakers.
I now moved the Mackie MR5 pair to the living room and disabled the built-in speakers of the television and then obtained a pair of KRK Rokit Powered 6 Generation 2 studio monitors which is equally accurate as the Mackie, but has better frequency response at 48HZ-20KHz (+-1.5db) due to it's 6" low frequency driver.WHAT TO GET...
If you're budget allows for a Mackie, I would get an MR5. A cheaper alternative but still along it's price range is the KRK RP5G2 which also comes with a 5" low frequency driver. But for the same price as the Mackie MR5 is the KRK RP6G2 with better frequency response and a hefty weight and size to boot.
The difference is the porting on the cabinet. Mackie believes in using a rear port, while KRK argues a front port is better as it allows more flexible placement without fear from unnecessary bass response due from the rear ports when placed nearer against the wall.
My recommendation is to listen to both at your nearest studio monitor dealer that stocks both and decide. In the future you can expand to a 2.1 configuration to extend the bass response even lower by purchasing their own respective subwoofer counterparts. As usual, KRK products are better priced so this might affect your decision now the same way it did to me.
If you want a 2.1 configuration right now, then the Blue Sky MediaDesk 2.1 with it's sealed cabinet enclosure all throughout will make sure that the bass you hear is the bass coming from the subwoofer and not from any port which only exists to help extend bass response to a lower frequency.
Either of this you won't go wrong. But please do yourself a favor and get yourself a decent studio monitor than an exorbitantly priced speaker set from a manufacturer that (1) either advertises amplification and frequency response that can be achieved at full clipping power or (2) won't even advertise their specifications at all and then claim their "actual" performance doesn't do justice to the over-equalized supposed sound output.

(More customer reviews)Audio Kontrol 1 is an elegant piece of hardware -- with physical heft, great software, nice sound quality, and a plethora of inputs (midi in and out, XLR in, and 1/8" in). This isn't for the project studio that relies on recording multiple inputs simultaneously, but not everyone needs that. It also comes with terrific soft synth and amp simulation software. The soft synth organs are excellent and unusual, with wonderful vintage timbres. If you don't have a FireWire input (which has superior throughput), this is the best USB solution I've used that combines midi and audio in a sleek, durable, and attractive package.

Flat response, clean bass, adjustable highs and 3 input options (xlr, 1/4", and RCA). They get nice and loud, without being harsh on the ears. Bought them over the M-audio bx series and mackie powered 5s. Very happy with the purchase... No complaints!
