Numark iDec iPod Recording & Playback System Review

Numark iDec iPod Recording and Playback System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have several audio racks as I do commercial audio for events in our area. I use Ipod Nano's as they have crossfade capability and I no longer have to hover over the board trying to crossfade music or use my notebook, etc. The Ipod Nano works great as I establish a playlist for a venue and then let it run. The problem is I'm often trying to find a good location for the Ipod to be connected into the system without knocking it around or worrying about the connections. (Also charging some Ipods, like the Nano while doing playback is a bit of a challenge due to the close proximity of the connectors, etc.) The IDEC solves all the problems. It takes up 2 rack spaces in a rack, you need to install the correct insert for the Ipod you'll be using and then insert the Ipod...you're good! You can use the large jog wheel like you would on the face of the Ipod, it's being charged, it's in a protected place on the rack itself which won't get knocked around, iand the backlight can remain on without worry of the battery running down, and you have large controls you can readily control vs trying to deal with the smaller buttons on the Ipod itself. I purchased one which I have at home and found it was very convenient, so I obtained one for my large location rack, and then another for a smaller rack. I can't say it's entirely worth the money if you're using Ipods only occasionally in a rack for one or two venues a month, etc. or you really don't run the system for ongoing hours of playback. If, however, you have a rack at home and you tend to use the Ipod a great deal and don't need a remote, it's great. If you have a system at an event where you're continually running playback audio or worried you're going to run out of juice before you can charge up the Ipod, it's great as it brings stability to the system. As far as recording, however, I haven't really tried it, although it's probably fine, I've just not done it as more often I just use it for playback. It's a well built unit and a great interface for your system.

Digital Blue Mixman DM2 Music Mixer Review

Digital Blue Mixman DM2 Music Mixer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my DM2 for the soul purpose of scratching. I thought it would be great to scratch any sound. You wouldn't have to go buy custom records because you could make your own samples and scratch those. I learned you can't do this with the packaged software because it uses its own file format and converting to TRK is annoying and sample length is limited. I found something alot better, its called Traktor and you CAN set up the DM2 to work with it.
Look online and find an application called DM2Midi and download the profiles so you can make the DM2 function as a Midi control device. Traktor can play and manipulate full length wav and mp3 files without any need to convert. This is a better setup than the MixMan software but its still not going to function like a real turntable. If you want that go for Final Scratch or Ms. Pinky. Its steep but it will be the most authentic experience.
DM2 with Traktor is a useful combo if you can get it set up (there are tutorials on sites and in forums) but there are limitations because of how the DM2 is made.
The DM2's "scratch rings" don't work the same way as actual vinyl and they probably never will. Real vinyl is always in motion and it's also pressure sensitive (you can slow it just by gliding your finger over it or you can stop it completely) the DM2 lacks that kind of control and with current Traktor profiles you have to hold down a button to scratch. You also can't utilize the crossfader when you're using one hand to hold a "scratch button" and the other to move the "scratch wheel."
I've tried using profiles for Traktor that don't need a button so you scratch with the wheel itself but this is still difficult. The rubber scratch wheel's can't sense pressure so you can't just put your finger on the wheel and stop/slow the "record." The DM2 doesn't know your finger is there until you edge the wheel back or forth and once you stop moving it, it goes back to playing even if your finger is still there.
Perhaps if the surface of the wheels had some kind of heat/pressure sensitve strip like the volume adjuster on an Ipod it would work a little better. The people who make DM2 need to consider its possible application with OTHER software, not just its own.

Prime Entertainment Mixman LoopStudio Review

Prime Entertainment Mixman LoopStudio
Average Reviews:

I remember once upon a time having Mixman and really enjoying it. I rebought it recently only to find that it's not supported by any OS newer than XP. I spoke with the company and they said it has been discontinued and no plans to make it compatible with Vista or Win7. Win 7's VM crashed when I try to install the driver and the software wont work without it.
I did see there are some people on the net independently trying to write newer drivers and other places show you how to make the hardware compatible with other programs. But, this is way too much to pay for this and not have it work.
They should at least mention the hardware/software requirements so you don't waste your time and know better what you're getting.
Disappointing. This really was a decent product once.

What a flaky company. This is basically new old stock with no current software development planned or promised. Even though Stanton claims differently, it does not work on Mac OS 10.6 or Intel Macs. "Open" means they opened up the software hoping someone else would develop something for it, but no one ever did. A huge waste of money.

Numark iDec A/V Playback and Recording Rack Interface for iPod Review

Numark iDec A/V Playback and Recording Rack Interface for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm writing this review as I can't find but one review on the IDEC anywhere on the web. We have several racks which we use for commercial audio applications and home use. I've used Ipods almost exclusively for location playback music but found that connecting it to a mixer to be a pain. We own several types of Ipods, and they've all been great, but we usually use a Nano as it allows a playlist to crossfade. (I haven't noticed that the others have that capability). If we run the system in Mono it means coming out of the Nano with a cable going to a splitter and then combining the signals into one input to go into the board. If in stereo it's just coming out of the Nano to a splitter and going into the board. If you run the system for hours at a time charging a Nano can be a challenge as the audio connector is too close to the charging connector (without using a Monster adapter, etc.) or hauling in a dock of some sort. Also the Nano's display while not illuminated is hard to see in some environments, so if you run the background display constantly you run the battery down quicker. To try and remedy all this, I purchased a Numark "Fit for Sound". In doing so I have a clean way of connecting the Nano, charging it, keeping it illuminated and operating the controls. Numark's Fit for Sound is the predecessor of the IDEC (?) but it is playback only and has both RCA and XLR connectors, and was supposedly designed for use in gyms and fitness centers (and has an infrared remote). Anyway, I purchased one and installed it into one of my racks. Voila (!) I had the perfect solution for having the Ipod in a stable rack-mounted device which charges, provides audio and the controls perform exactly as the controls are on the Ipod. (No more fumbling with an Ipod in a dock and worrying about getting the unit out of the dock or possibly damaging the connector, etc. all while running sound at a location.) I liked it so much I put it in my rack at home (so again I'm without a solution for a location rack...so I needed another one). The IDEC will probably provide the same performance as the Fit for Sound as it looks identical with the exception of possibly no infrared remote, and not having the XLR and will only have RCA connectors (no biggie). The recording aspect is also a benefit, but be aware that not all Ipods will do voice recording, and I've found by using external microphones on Ipods and through the use of recording interfaces by other companies the Ipods (which have moving hard drives, such as the full size Ipods we own) create a slight background noise for 10 seconds or so every few minutes as (I think) this is when the audio data is being written to the drive. I believe this is something internal to the Ipod and not associated with a recording interface, but I've not recorded with the IDEC so I don't know the exact cause or remedy. I don't think most folks notice this as the noise is like a slight whine and I notice it as I'm using some higher-end headphones and listen for any issues. No one else has brought this to my attention and it's not readily noticed unless you're doing something where there is a lapse in the audio, such as between words being spoken (if recording a sermon) or between songs where you use an Ipod as a recording device. I don't know this is the case with all Ipods or with Nanos (which reportedly don't have moving hard drives) or will be associated with the IDEC, but my guess is this has more to do with the Ipod than the recording interface. I found the price on Amazon for the IDEC with shipping is the lowest I've found on the web, and I'm looking forward to using it both as a playback and recording device. The Fit for Sound device (is identical except for being white in color) is basically bulletproof, solid, reliable and well built. The IDEC should be just as good and probably before all is said and done I'll have one in each of my racks. You can think of it as a super-dooper, bulletproof Ipod dock which mounts on a rack and provides a safe, reliable, and clean way to run an Ipod with the added benefit of being able to record and that probably sums up what the IDEC is all about. It's the answer to what many of us have really needed and wished someone came up with a long time ago. I hope this review helps.

I bought this for my American Audio CD player- the Q-fade never worked but i think its just the CD player. If d had known i would have gotten a bigger mixer with LCD screen and USB ports. The slider is messed up, i had to fix it... but it gets the job done. When I put it on TOP of my 19" rack, the power cord had no place to go. )sticks stright out the back. i had to modify the connection going in to fit my DMX contoller above it. Wish it had a light socket or more LED's.

Pyle makes good, affordable equipment. This mixer handles everything a mobile dj needs. The sound effects are pretty nice. This mixer has all the right features, at a very nice price. This is a very nice looking mixer in the rack and really puts out brightness. The only drawback was the button to turn on/off the sound effects did not work. No big deal as I just can turn down the volume on the effects control. It's really not worth going thru all the return stuff, just for a single (non-important) button. Pretty good deal for the bucks!

Average Reviews:

This was purchaced with at the same time i purchased other Gemini products to make a complete backup mobile DJ system. As a 5-channel mixer, it superseded my original 4-channel mixer, and is now part of my everyday system. This has the EQ on each of the 5 channels, and is very nice if you have a lot of connections. It comes with a cheap 1/4" (3.5mm) to RCA (phono) jack cable, that i use along with two more 1/4" between my laptop, MP3 player, phone, or any random connection. The seperate mic channel has a cool talk over feature that tones down the music while you talk, or a simple "ON" feature. No switching back and forth on channels from being restricted to 4. The Main volume is controlled by a knob (kind of odd for me) but i rather have the 5th channel.
Simple LED lights for the DB's go Green to Red. the stripes on the side match the Dual CD player by Gemini, and my DMX512 board.
Works for all the connections I need! :)

I bought this to do house parties. The unit functions nice but the typos in the descriptions found around the internet are horrendous. First this unit has only dual ipod inputs. Not a usb and dual ipod inputs. Second there is only one light...That is the power light. The little white buttons do not light up nor are they green as stated in the manuals you can see online. They do not flash. The price is good for the quality of the product. It does a nice job of music tone and control of the ipods back and forth. You could do worse.
